Summer (June, July, August)

The meadows are now turning yellow with buttercups, wild roses and other hedgerow shrubs are coming into flower. Dragonflies are over the lakes and ponds, skylarks are in full song and the house martins, swallows and swifts are back for a while

  • Dry-stone walling projects now take over from woodland work
  • Weed control through the summer- around the base of new trees and hedging is critical to good establishment for the first 2-3 years
  • Add barley straw to ponds and lakes early to minimise problems with algal blooms (use onion bags)
  • Planning for next winter's woodland work is underway and felling licenses should be applied for in late summer to avoid any delays
  • Finalise design and planning issues for winter projects
  • The end July sees the finish of the breeding season and ride cutting and some essential hedge trimming can be undertaken
  • It's a good time with the ground dry for getting on with fencing around next seasons tree planting
  • Lakes and reed beds can be drawn down for cutting and essential maintenance to sluices etc
