Hedgelaying and Coppicing
I have been laying hedges for over 20 years and have been given accreditted craftsman status by the National Hedge Laying Society. I provide quotations based on the condition of individual hedges. Please give me a call to discuss. Hedge laying can generally be undertaken from October through to March
Hedges are a very visual part of the landscape tapestry and essential corridors for wildlife
Hedge laying is an ancient craft and form of hedge management used to create a living fence. Hedgelaying has evolved over many centuries with the need to enclose land.
If hedges are trimmed only with tractor-mounted flails they eventually become weaker and open at the base and poor at containing and providing shelter to stock and wildlife. They will eventually become very gappy and many hedges are simply lost in this way through neglect
Hedge laying promotes regeneration of a hedge from the base where it is needed to remain thick and healthy and will prolong the life of the hedge indefinately. Hedgelaying is an ancient craft but still has a role to play in modern countryside management.
Many hedges are often very thin and neglected before hedgelaying is considered and some sections may require coppicing rather than laying. With a combination of laying, coppicing and re-planting all hedges are worth restoring.
